The Kissinger Factor

September 27, 2008

In case you missed it, I was twittering last night instead of blogging.  http://twitter.com/lauraelizabethm

Michelle Malkin liveblogged last night’s debate and covered one of the pressing issues the candidate’s spent quite some time sparring on:

10:15pm Eastern. McCain attacks Obama’s pledge to meet tyrants without preconditions.

Obama blusters on his preconditions/preparations line.

10:18pm Eastern. McCain is strong on North Korea.

Obama cites Kissinger.

McCain comes back: He’s known Kissinger for 30 years. Obama is parsing words.

Since that was a big argument is last night’s debate…who really had it right?  McCain or Obama?  The Weekly Standard found out from Kissinger himself:

Henry Kissinger believes Barack Obama misstated his views on diplomacy with US adversaries and is not happy about being mischaracterized. He says: “Senator McCain is right. I would not recommend the next President of the United States engage in talks with Iran at the Presidential level. My views on this issue are entirely compatible with the views of my friend Senator John McCain. We do not agree on everything, but we do agree that any negotiations with Iran must be geared to reality.”

Sorry Barry, guess you WERE wrong.

  1. Just saw Henry on Fox news restating exactly what you reported above. He does think that discussions with Iran are necessary – at a low level. He doesn’t think any interaction with ahmodeenojawd and our president are really necessary but, if they are, ONLY if there is an actual possibility of an accord; a PRECONDITION to what the talks are going to be about. McCain was absolutely dead on the money – Obama doesn’t understand what he’s saying and McCain did well to ask the question what does the president SAY after akmo says “I’m going to destroy Israel.”? It really appears to be THAT simple and yet this arrogant junior senator, pumped up by the DNC machine into something he is not, refuses to admit when he’s wrong. This may be his greatest weakness – his enormous ego.
