Obama Pays His Women Less

September 5, 2008

So, who really supports the feminist movement?  Hat tip to South Texas Chisme for bringing this one to my attention.

While Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has vowed to make pay equity for women a top priority if elected president, an analysis of his Senate staff shows that women are outnumbered and out-paid by men.

That is in contrast to Republican presidential candidate John McCain’s Senate office, where women, for the most part, out-rank and are paid more than men.

Outrank so much so that Senator McCain’s got a lady as a running mate.  And the plot thickens.

On average, women working in Obama’s Senate office were paid at least $6,000 below the average man working for the Illinois senator. That’s according to data calculated from the Report of the Secretary of the Senate, which covered the six-month period ending Sept. 30, 2007. Of the five people in Obama’s Senate office who were paid $100,000 or more on an annual basis, only one — Obama’s administrative manager — was a woman.

Keep Judge Rios!

September 5, 2008

Judge Danny Rios of the 449th court in Hidalgo County has announced his bid for re-election!  Check him out here.

Upon graduating from Princeton University (1987) and the University of Texas at Austin School of Law (1992), Danny returned to the Valley to practice law in both the private and public sectors. Through a wide variety of legal challenges, including prosecuting and defending criminal cases, he developed a strong reputation for competence, fairness, and hard work.

In the 1990s Rios worked for South Texas’s most-respected law firms where he focused on defending personal injury cases. He also served as Assistant Criminal District Attorney for Hidalgo County. In 1999 he launched his own practice. As an independent lawyer Rios came to specialize in commercial transactions and litigation, while continuing to represent clients in personal injury.

Most recently, Danny served as General Counsel to the City of Edinburg, his beloved hometown. Through his friendly demeanor and impressive legal knowledge, Rios further established his reputation as a man of fairness and trust. Danny resigned his post in municipal government, when Governor Rick Perry asked him to preside over the newly created 449th Judicial District Court in Hidalgo County, Texas.  Judge Danny Rios was sworn in December of 2007 and has been presiding over his court since.

Rios’s breadth of experience in business, public service, and law has served the Valley well.  Let’s Keep Judge Rios.

Message to Home Invaders.

September 5, 2008

We Texans like our guns.  And we like our homes and families, too.  So a message to you home invaders and criminals:

The 34-year-old mother of two grabbed a shotgun that had been pointed at her face early Wednesday, starting a struggle that ended with one intruder killed with his own weapon and another in the hospital.

“I wasn’t going to let them get to my babies,” she said, recalling the moment when she pushed up the muzzle of the shotgun, pointing it away from her children’s rooms.

Although the intruders told her to keep quiet, she screamed for her husband. She told her 12-year-old son, who was awakened by the sound of the shattering glass front door, to get his 5-year-old sister and hide.

“It was like a horror movie,” her husband, 32-year-old Keith Hoehn, told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “I thought I was a dead man. We’re fighting for our lives.”

With Kellie Hoehn clinging to the weapon’s muzzle, her husband tackled the man who held the shotgun. She knocked the intruder in the head with a jar candle, giving her husband a chance to wrest the shotgun.

DC take note…another reason why gun bans = bad news.  Not everyone is this lucky.

Obama Gets Upset

September 5, 2008

Obama seems to think he’s been going through the same treatment Palin’s going through:

Sen. Barack Obama ditched his normal languid cool today, punching back at Gov. Sarah Palin as he spoke with reporters in York, Pa, hotly defending his work as a community organizer. He said he assumes Palin “wants to be treated same way guys want to be treated, which means their records are under scrutinty. I’ve been through this for 19 months. She’s been through it, what four days?”

Hold up…let me guess this straight.  Obama, you’ve been through 19 months of people questioning if you should be elected to the White House because you’re a parent?  You’ve been through 19 months of people questioning if you should be elected based on the fact that you have a new born with special needs and that you should be at home being a parent?

Or maybe you’ve spent the last 19 months being treated like less than human by sexist, disgusting and vile remarks?

No…I believe you’ve been through 19 months (and counting) of people still trying to figure out what exactly qualifies you to be President of the United States. We’ll keep counting the days, don’t worry.
