Big John Cornyn Up Again.

August 5, 2008

Rick Noriega just can’t catch a break, even from the MSM.

The Associated Press ran a piece about Noriega’s less than stellar results thus far on the campaign trail.

There he was, trying to attract Texans’ attention by holding a Webcast town hall meeting to answer voter questions about his U.S. Senate race.

Two minutes later, Democrat Rick Noriega’s show turned to static. Lots of static. Then the camera tilted upside down. Then more static. The screen went to black. A few voters’ questions could be heard, but Noriega’s answers were often interrupted by audio and video glitches.

Technical troubles aren’t the only difficulties lately for Noriega’s long shot bid to oust Republican Sen. John Cornyn.

Even college professors see it:

“You have to have a perfect storm exist for Noriega to win,” said Jerry Polinard, a political science professor at the University of Texas-Pan American. He said the waters right now appear calm and favorable for Cornyn. “At this point the race is almost just completely off the radar screen.”

And in the Blogosphere, Senator Cornyn seems to understand “new media” far better than his non-twittering opponent.

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn’s campaign has embraced Twitter as a way to get out the Republican’s message.

Democratic challenger Rick Noriega, not so much.

(For those like me who were late to the party, Twitter’s a step simpler than a blog. It allows you to post 140-character instant messages to keep in touch for work or fun. Here’s a Washington Post column on it.)

Cornyn’s Twitter account seems to be updated fairly regularly — including with a pitch yesterday urging people to listen to him on KTRH.

As of this morning, Noriega’s account hadn’t been updated since five months ago, when he noted he had a “Great event in Brownsville.”

Is there another Noriega account I’m missing, or has he given up on this avenue of communication?

You can follow me on twitter, too.  My username: lauraelizabethm.

My whole name wouldn’t fit. :(

Conservative Activists Get it Right…

August 5, 2008

Um…no pun intended.

The Politico reports that MoveOn.org’s protest was answered by one by conservatives.

A protest planned by MoveOn.org against the ongoing House GOP floor protest became a surreal scene Tuesday when right-wing activists showed up outside the Capitol to protest the protest protest.

The conservative activists, numbering about 20 and affiliated with Free Republic, stood behind the MoveOn speakers waving signs along the lines of “Pump Rage? Thank MoveOn” and “It’s the Supply, Stupid.” The MoveOn crowd countered with their own pithy “Drill and Spill, or Surf and Swim?” and “Just Say No to False Solutions.”

Great job Free Republic.

And in Texas news, Senator John Cornyn has challenged Pelosi and Reid to suspend their vacation plans and get back to work for the American people.  Cornyn is up for re-election this fall and faces a “challenge” from the not so energy savvy Rick Noriega.

It would be nice if Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid cared more about the hardship high energy prices are causing their constituents than they do about appeasing their Hollywood friends. But sadly, they don’t.

The nation is confronted with an energy crisis. Congress should be working day and night to pass a comprehensive plan. Instead, they went on vacation.

It is one thing to be against domestic exploration. But it is another to not even allow debate on the issue, which is exactly what Democrats did when they high-tailed it out of town without allowing Congress to deal with the problem. The overwhelming majority of Americans, and Congress for that matter, support increasing domestic production. But the extreme left wing of the Democratic Party oppose it, and that’s who Pelosi and Reid are paying attention to.

Don’t forget to sign Senator Cornyn’s petition to get Reid and Pelosi back to the office and out of the summer fun in the sun.

I signed the Call Congress Back petition and now the numbers have skyrocketed from 5304 people to 15,434 and counting.

Will you join the thousands of us who believe Congress shouldn’t take a vacation until they solve the energy crisis?

That’s hot – Umbrella Ella Ella ’08

Update from McCain’s Camp:

After watching it, Tucker Bounds, a spokesman for McCain, had this to say to “The Insider”:

“It sounds like Paris Hilton supports John McCain’s ‘all of the above’ approach to America’s energy crisis — including both alternatives and drilling. Paris Hilton might not be as big a celebrity as Barack Obama, but she obviously has a better energy plan.”

It’s official, Paris is smarter than Obama….at least on energy.
