Follow Up at Trinity University

October 2, 2007

You can recall here that the Trinity University College Republicans’ affirmative action bake sale that was at the very last minute stifled by the university out of fear of “offensiveness”.

Well, as it turns out, the College Republicans succeeded in not only getting their point across about affirmative action and the necessity for free speech on campus, but Trinity University is also hosting a discussion on the issue of affirmative action this Wednesday.  Good job, CRs.

However, I’d like to take this time to note the lack of journalistic integrity of Trinity’s “news”paper, the Trinitonian.

The College Republicans cancelled the entire concept of the bake sale because they felt like they couldn’t get their message across unless they used race, unless they were allowed to potentially “offend” people.

Is there no such thing as fact checking anymore?

The Editor of the Trinitonian, I recall, made a visit to the table that Allen Otto, President of the College Republicans, and I were at during the bake sale.  The rudeness and bias was present just by her demeanor in addressing Allen and me.  In fact, when I tried to answer a question for her the “journalist” told me I had no place to speak at her university because I didn’t go to school there.

Apparently, according to the Editor of the Trinitonian, if you don’t go to Trinity, you have no voice on the campus.  I wonder if she’d treat State Representatives, the Mayor, the City Council, the President of UTSA, and my fellow Roadrunners the way she treated me.  Sure we’re not students there, but if we’re invited guests, I would think we have the fabulous Constitutional Right to free speech.

I hope the free speech debate continues at Trinity.

Now if only we can get the Editor in some journalistic integrity classes.
