UTSA MSA Follow Up #3

September 11, 2007

After YCT’s initial press release, which was posted yesterday, we received support from the College Republicans at UTSA and the College Republicans at Trinity University.

From UTSA College Republicans:

“Had this been any other group on campus, especially a Republican or conservative organization, harassing a Muslim student the reaction would likely be very different,” continued Andres Bocanegra, Chairman of the College Republicans at UTSA, “The reaction from the university would likely be to have the organization’s privileges revoked among other possible disciplinary actions. The MSA has led to the portrayal of a negative image of this university and their claims are ludicrous and reprehensible. Blaming the Jewish people for the September 11th attacks when Muslim extremists were at the center of the plot, and to refer to that infamous day as a ‘great accomplishment’ is absurd. Like our fellow student organization we only ask that the university look at this video and review the policies regarding filming students on campus. Also, the MSA should be given a proper review by the Student Activities Office, and Student Judicial Affairs once the student in the video is identified.”

And from Trinity University College Republicans:

“The College Republican’s at Trinity University has a policy of treating other’s, the community, and the self with respect, closely reflecting the views of the YCT of UTSA. This type of respect has obviously fallen through the cracks of the MSA at UTSA,” says Allen Otto, President of the College Republicans at Trinity University, “The inaction of the administration in this case is deplorable. To ignore such harassment by an individual that, in some other situation would be considered overtly racist, is a statement of allowance of such acts.”

Catch us on the local news tonight (Fox 29 at 9) for an interview about the situation. We’re happy the community has reacted to this in a favorable manner.

The San Antonio Express News reported here:

Yusif Mohammad, president of the Muslim Student Association, however, said he knew nothing about the video until he was alerted to it by Barry McKinney, the university’s student activities director, on Friday.

“We have nothing to do with that video, and we don’t endorse that video,” Mohammad said.

“In a time like this, when Muslims are under fire, it is not the type of video to be making, even if it is supposed to be funny. I feel it is inappropriate.”

I’m glad MSA released that statement.  Thanks for the quick response, guys.
